How we perform searches
Every story in our website is stored as searchable text in our database, including the captions under pictures and any text revealed when a picture is clicked. All forum content is searchable and in addition we have cached content of certain sites related to Carluke. So if you search for a name and we find it in our search we attribute points to each occurrence. If a multi-word search like "King James" is found as an exact match (not James King) then we attribute 5 points to each exact match. In this manner if you see a story with 13 points, it's likely there were two exact matches and three inexact matches in the document.
When searching the CPHS DVD we search for a minimum two word name (Firstname Lastname) but include the Middle initial or name if known. So for Margaret Crichton Arnott try both Margaret C Arnott and Margaret Crichton Arnott to ensure the search finds whatever is recorded on the DVD. Remember too that fathers and sons often have the same names, so the date of death may be the only way of validating an entry in the DVD

We also have a simple index of all the People and Places found in our stories.
You can find this index HERE
