Service History   Eddie was called up to the army on 27th November 1940 and joined what was originally called the 10th Battalion Royal Tank Regiment later to be renamed the 7th Bn Royal Tank Regiment in honour of the the original 7th Bn which had been lost at Tobruk. Eddie remained with A Squadron for the duration of the war as a tank driver and instructor. The A Squadron Diary recorded that up until the 7th Royal Tank Regiment embarked for France on 18 June 1944 (D-Day + 12), they had been training at locations across Britain from Inverary to Devon. Bad weather prevented disembarking on the French Coast until 21 June 1944.

On 28 June orders to advance were received and the following day battle against the 12 SS Panzer and 1 SS (Adolph Hitler) Panzer was fought. It was for bravery in the field that day that Eddie was recommended for an award. News of his award of the MILITARY MEDAL was announced on 9 September when the 7th RTR were near Le Harve. An extract from A Squadron Diary records that Eddie further distinguished himself in battle (see pages 4 and 5). He returned home to Carluke in January 1946.
