|Mr Smith referred to on previous pages ploughing had in fact won a number of medals for ploughing even though by this time he was known as a fulltime dairyman.|
Family history researchers may like to know how things developed. Initially we had just one date to go on -James Smith was born at Orchard on 5th July 1829
Using ancestry.co.uk and the British Newspaper Archive, here is what we have been able to discover.
1. James married Catherine Donald at some point between 1851 and 1854. They went on to have at least 4 sons – Thomas ( born about 1853/4 ), John ( born on 13th October 1856 ), James Stewart Smith ( born on 13th March 1860 ) and Alexander Allan Smith ( born on 11th March 1864 ).
2. The 1871 Census shows James and Catherine living with their four sons and Isabella Gilchrist ( 19-year old servant ) in Whiteshaw Cottage, Carluke. James gave his occupation as a dairyman while his son Thomas was an apprentice cabinet maker and his son John was a byre boy.
