Bamlett Horse-Reaper Machine (video)

Video copied from YouTube    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zB0lEOm708

Horse drawn machinery has been a feature of the landscape in the UK for over a hundred years. This item is quite rare now and is a Bamlett Reaper for silage, drawn by a pair of horses. The sound is only audible on the first 30 seconds of the video.

In the late 1800's this equipment was considered top of the line hi-tech hardware and took over from men using scythes to cut silage. As you can see its performance would be a thousand times more effective and only came about through the industrial revolution and manufacture of steel tools. The reaper was still in use on smaller farms into the 1950's before horses were replaced by tractors
