Station Road, Carluke 1905

Valuation Roll for 1905
Here is a page from the Station Road valuation roll for 1905, It lists some of the occupiers at the time who we see today as the worthies of Carluke in then, the new 20th Century of middle class families and businesses.

Thomas Prentice - Saddler
Samuel Ambrose Hislop - Coal Salesman a trustee of the  late Alex. Tudhope - Coalmaster
Bessie Marshall, living next door to Archibald Marshall - Auctioneer
Agnes Orrock - Photographer
Dr John Bradford

Then in the building known as Kirkton House there are sub-tenants of Gavin L. Reid and Samuel Hamilton in Johannesburg South Africa. (See this story about Kirkton House and S. Africa and Canada)
we find the following people
Margaret Pinkerton, Hugh McKinnell retired,  John Hobart an oil merchant,  Thomas D Martin a wood merchant, Alexander MacMillan a Draper , Mary Freebairn , Elzabeth Patterson and  Betsy Kobb

In all, quite a cross-section of Carluke society at the time.


Footnote: James Ambrose Hislop is listed in 1903 Scottish Post Office Directory  as living in Lilypark Hose and on the same page we can see Hobart John H. Victoria avenue and Hinksman John, Drumbredon, Victoria  avenue
