Carluke Bowling Club

Carluke Bowling Club are looking for photographs of Past-Presidents. Can anyone help with
any of the following? The first two we have a picture but not of a high quality. Can you help with a clearer photo? if you can please email us or post information on the Forum. Does your family have a picture of any of the others ?

 

1956  President William A. McKay
Was a Police inspector and retired in 1956. Had a daughter Helen, who lived at Caneluk Avenue, Carluke.  He died on 15/12/1967 and was buried in Motherwell.
 

 

1950 President Archie Telfer.
Again, was a policeman. Have no details other than
he was transferred to East Kilbride.

 

We have no pictures of the following Presidents, so any help would be appreciated.


1952 President Lewis Shaw
Was born in Carstairs in 1897 to James Shaw and Susan Paterson. Was 1 of 8 children, his siblings were Annie, Ethel, Eva, Frances, James,
Lilian and Mabel. He married Isabella Bennet Russell, daughter of Willie Russell, Slaterer & Plasterer on 2/8/1929 at Crown Hotel, Carluke, and died on 22/6/1974. They had no children.
He worked for the railway, transport manager I believe. He also collected rent money for

the Pillans family and possible worked for the Burns family also.

 
1909 President John Muir
Was born in Whitburn on 8/8/1861 to Thomas Muir and Ann Crozier. He married Margaret Leslie Sim on 22/6/1886. They appear to have had no children. In the cencus up to 1901, he was living in Fauldhouse, but was living at "Ardlea", Kirk Road, Carluke by 1911. He was a draper.



1902 President Isaac Love
Was born on 4/5/1867 in New Monkland to John Love and Janet Sword. Married Jane Martin on 30/4/1898 in Carluke. Had 4 children, viz.,
Jeanie, born 1899 in Carluke, John, born 1901 in Carluke, Margaret Marion, born 1902/3 in Carluke, and William Martin, born 2/9/1905 in Airdrie. William married Lucy Tuddenham in Edinburgh in 1936, but died in Selkirk on 18/1/1941.
Isaac was Colliery Manager at Castlehill Colliery in 1901, but went on to become a teacher

and was teacher at Primary School on the Island of Gigha in 1911. He died in Selkirk on
11/6/1937.


1895 President Charles Ogilvie
Was born on 9/2/1844 in Fossoway and Tullibole in Perthshire to James Ogilvie and Jean Baxter. Married Mary Ann Sandiford in Neilston, Renfrew on 22/11/1876 and had 4 children, viz., Ann, born 2/6/1868, Jane, born 9/9/1870, Emma, born 15/1/1873, and James, born 26/11/1876, all in Carluke. Their mother appears to have died in childbirth in 1876, and Charles later remarried Jessie Adam. The oldest daughter Ann married Colin Park Baird of Wishaw, and in 1901 were living in Renfrew.
Charles died at their house in June 1902. He was a Grain merchant, at worked at the Low
Mill, Carluke. It appears that his son James took it over on his father's death, and he also
had a cycle business in Glasgow 


1891 President Richard Pillans
Was born on 29/4/1864, oldest son of Alexander Pillans and Elizabeth Henderson Cadzow. Married Minnie Ferrier Strain in 1899 in Glasgow and had at least 1 son, Richard Norman Pillans, born 14/3/1907 in Uddingston and who died in Dundonald, Ayrshire in 1963. Richard died at his residense "Cardoba", 10 Uddingston Rd, Bothwell on 12/10/1930. He had taken over his father's business of Nut & Bolt manufacturing in Motherwell after his father died.

 

1878 President William Archibald Robert Gilchrist
One of 8 children born to Archibald Gilchrist and Mary Paton on 5/9/1813. Married Marion Harvie on 8/12/1843 and had 5 children, viz., Mary, born 6/2/1850. Catherine, born 22/3/1852, William, born 3/1/1857, Isabella, born 9/9/1859 and Marion, born 5/6/1862. Was proprietor of the lands of Stockwell, including Stockwell Colliery, nr Braidwood. Also had a Grocer's business in the High St, Carluke. He died in Carluke on 2/2/1899.

 

In addition, we are also looking for a photograph of the 1st Lady President

 1930 Lady President Martha Paterson
Was the wife of John Paterson who had a boot and shoe business in Wishaw and a shop in the High St, Carluke. They had 1 daughter, Mary, who married John B. Graham of Bearsden, on 25/4/1941.
Martha Paterson died in the 1960's.
